Protein Supplements?

In about a month and a half-2months i am going to be joining a gym. i am 15 1/2years old 5’10 132lbs. i am lean..i have plenty of muscle obviously its difficult to get much bigger than i am now without lifting weights and getting more protein in my diet. So when i start going 2 a gym i was thinking about beginnning 2 take optimum 100% whey protein which is considered to be the best protein supplement around, since whey is so good for u. My mom called my doctor and told her my plans and she said that a diet high in protein will cause kidney damage….This is difficult to believe considering that many teenagers around the world, are using supplements to help them get more muscle for sports or w/e other reasons… So what is the real deal behind this kidney damage. She said i can get plenty of protein from outside normal food…is she kidding thinking rihgt now without TRYING to get more protein in my diet i might consume…50g of protein a day TOPS,that sucks….

  • Yup:

You should never go above 2g of protein per pound of body weight. You should be taking 1.6-1.7. Some people don’t believe that protein supplements make a difference… but they do.

If you eat an average diet, you get PLENTY of protein. Suppliments just add calories (because anything more than you need is just turned into fat). I think you would need a LOT of suppliments before you would have to worry about kidney damage, but it won’t help any more than eating and egg and it’s a lot more expensive.
