Should You Take Whey Protein And Creatine If Doing Workout?
Hello, I walked past GNC today and saw those big bottles of whey protein and creatine tablets that they sell. [is gnc a rip-off?]
Are those neccessary for people who work out or do muscle intensive sports like martial arts? If they have a normal healthy diet from their food intake per day, do you think its still neccessary to take those extra supplements?
Also, What does Creatine do for you?

No supplements are “necessary” in the sense that you cannot live without them. To elaborate on that point, there are only EFAs (essential fatty acids) and EAAs (essential amino acids). Despite what people may tell you, there is actually no such thing as an essential carbohydrate, although I wouldn’t recommend removing carbohydrates from your diet. The point is, supplements are just that — supplements. They supplement your current progress in terms of your athletic or physique or health goals when used correctly. This simple fact is lost on many people.
If you are as active as you say you are, then you may find it more convenient to supplement with a whey protein. As a starting point, aim for at least one gram of protein for every pound of body weight (1g/lb.).
Creatine, on the other hand, is simply a tri-peptide (three amino acids bonded together). To save a long discussion, creatine fuels short, explosive efforts lasting less than 10-15 seconds; it works by donating its phosphate molecule to ADP to form ATP, your body’s primary energy substrate. If you would like to research more, look up the ATP-PC energy system (PC stands for phosphocreatine) or the alactic anaerobic system (they are one in the same).
In short, yes, you would probably find supplementing with whey protein and creatine beneficial to your martial arts pursuits.
I will refrain from commenting on GNC either positively or negatively, however the website http://www.bestpricenutrition.com has always been good to me. Great prices, fast shipping, certainly cheaper than GNC.

Both whey and creatine are used primarily by people who are looking to get very muscular. They are not a requirement for anybody.
The whey protein is used to help rebuild the muscle that gets broken down in heavy, intense workouts.
Creatine essentially makes your muscles retain more water, enlarging the cells, and thereby making your muscles larger. It is typically taken in “cycles” that can be tedious at times.
IMO, neither are necessary for martial arts.
If you are doing a sport, say martial arts. Than whey protein and creatine are a GREAT combo for recovery! Make sure you invest in a quality , chemical free whey protein and a quality creatine.
Creatine is a cell volumizer, that has been shown to produce great strength gains as well as gains in body weight. If you are not trying to gain too much weight, than use the creatine wisely (5grams a day) Good luck!!
Whey protein and Creatine are a couple of the best muscle building additions available on the market today.
If you are new to working out and need to get bigger in a rush, one of the 1st things you want to get into your diet straight away is creatine. Muscle cells need more energy during contraction and may use up all of the available ATP in a long workout. To compensate for this lack, muscle cells maintain a reserve of creatine phosphate. When required, the creatine will “donate” a high-energy phosphate to adenosine diphosphate, forming ATP. And it is ATP that is used to power all energy-dependent reactions of cellular metabolism. Creatine is found naturally in a lot of foods, particularly meats and fish. The average person uses about two grams of creatine a day solely to maintain standard energy metabolism. This is more than twice the quantity of creatine found in the average person’s diet. This is the reason why creatine additions are so critical to perfect muscle expansion and performance.
Creatine monohydrate in itself works, but lacks a delivery system to get more of it into your muscles so you end up wasting valuable growing time on a supplement that would produce better results with a quick delivery, system.
There are several products available today that combine Creatine with a delivery system. Presently CELL-TECH(tm) by MuscleTech has been recognized as one of the better products on the market. One study showed that after just seven days, those subjects using CELL-TECH enjoyed average gains of just about four pounds of mass. In the meantime, subjects taking just regular creatine with water averaged less than one pound of mass.
With results like these, it is simple to see why a combined creatine/delivery supplement can–and should–be included in your sport nourishment program.
As you may already know, protein is the necessary nutrient your body uses to build, correct, and maintain muscle tissue. Optimally, you would consume between 1.0 -1.25 grams of protein per lbs. of body weight spread out evenly throughout the day.
That would add up to 6 servings per day with approximately 1/6 of your protein needs per sitting. This leads directly to the issue of which types of proteins you want, and when.
Whey is the ideal protein source for speedy post-workout recovery. Research has shown that whey has the highest biological impact of any protein source. This is the reason why supplement corporations have flooded the market with every kind of whey protein formula possible. Creatine and whey protein are 2 of the most studied supplements used to build muscle on the market today.
Optimum is one of the most well respected names in the industry. Almost every professional Bodybuilder has at one time or another endorsed their products. The consensus seams to be the 100% Whey Protein is the one to go with. It won the supplement of the year for 2005/6/7/8 which is saying a lot.
I like the Extreme Milk Chocolate. Put it in a blender with a few ice cubes and 12 ounce’s of skim milk, blend for about 20-30 seconds and away you go. It tastes like a good malt milkshake.
