He especially loves chocolates which have been frozen. For his wife, however, this was not an inspiring discovery, rather a newly found trigger for a condition she suffers according to celebrated as Temporomandibular Joint syndrome. This was a new symptom to my ears so I asked her to explain a greater amount of of her particular symptoms. Most TMJ sufferers experience the same or similar symptoms but some are always surprising. Or, at least this is what I have found in researching this condition to create my TMJ program. The acronym TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint. This is what some people mistakenly refer to as a disorder, however, TMJ syndrome is actually a disorder of the joint. The TMJ is responsible for allowing us to talk chew and yawn. They are located on either side of the face in front of the ears. TMJs are made up of blood vessels, nerves, bones and muscles. You can find this joint by placing your digital finger pulse oximeter in front of your ear and then opening and closing your mouth. The jawbone can perform two movements – opening/closing the mouth and acting as a hinge and also a gliding action which allows you to open your mouth wide. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Treatment A disorder occurs when the joint gets eroded and slides out of its alignment. Some medical conditions (i.e., arthritis) damage the cartilage that makes up the joint. An injury can also cause this disorder. TMJ disorders are also caused when overusing the joint. This is another reason your local dentist may tell you not to grind or clench your teeth, in addition to tooth erosion. Sometimes people are born with this condition. The joint is irregular in development. Triggers include: lack of sleep, stress, exposure to air-conditioning on the face, eating or drinking cold food and drinks, clenching the teeth repeatedly and leaning forward to view a computer screen causing poor posture. TMJ syndrome affects women more than men. Experts say 5-15% of the population but agree the number is likely higher due to misdiagnosis. Symptoms include: Headache, neck pain, difficulty opening and closing the mouth, pain or tenderness in the jaw, earache, pain in the face and a clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth. Surgery is rarely required and most of the things that cause this condition can be corrected. For example, your local dentist can create a "bite guard" to help you keep from grinding your teeth. Stop suffering from TMJ anymore.
