Vegetarian Sports Nutrition

For sports persons, a good planned nutrition is an important part of any training. It could be any sport only practice and techniques will not give that extra power to perform the best. Every aspect has to be well planned. If you are a vegetarian and follow a vegetarian diet then your choices of foods and supplements get limited considerably as a lot of nutrients are easily derived from animal products such as meat, fish and poultry. They are a good source of proteins.

A vegetarian person should have a variety of foods in his diet like vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts or even dairy products like milk. It should be noted that a vegetarian diet should have a lot more than carbohydrates. Good protein sources can be fruits, green leafy vegetables, root vegetables and nuts. Animal proteins have all the essential amino acids required, which individual vegetarian foods lack. So having a good variety of plant proteins can help in the supply of these nutrients.

Other minerals like calcium, iron and Zinc are very important for athletes and people engaged in sports. They should be able to meet these requirements from their diet. There are some sports nutrition supplements which are derived from plant extracts, these should be taken in addition to the diet to avoid any kind of deficiencies in the body.

A diet may be vegetarian or otherwise, our body has the same requirement of all the nutrients which become very essential in case a person is engaged in any kind of a sport. There are no special considerations or special categories for vegetarian sports persons so they have to put that extra effort in balancing their diets for that optimum performance. It is not impossible to do that, all it takes is more understanding about foods, diet and body.
